Sometimes, we are the biggest obstacle to what God has planned for our lives. Whether it be a great career, a future spouse or healing from illness, we get in the way of God’s plan for a breakthrough. Today we are going to explore five ways to miss your miracle.

The Word

In John 5:1-9, we are at the pool where the crippled go each day to get healed. Jesus comes by and asks a man who has been afflicted for 38 years. Jesus asks him if he wants to get well. The answers the man gives Jesus gives us insight into why this man may have missed his miracle. Ultimately, Jesus tells the man to walk and the man does receive his healing.

Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,

JOHN 5:1-9

What does this interaction between this man and Jesus show us about how to miss your miracle?

5 Ways to Miss your Miracle

1. Make Excuses

When Jesus asked the man if he wanted to be well, the man did not really answer Him. The man offered Jesus an excuse as to why he had not been healed already. It almost seemed like the man became defensive toward Jesus’ question.

If you want to miss the miracle God has for you just make an excuse. Find a reason that someone else is going to get what you are seeking. Come up with a reason that it can’t happen for you. Instead, take your eyes off of the excuses and focus on the truth that God has a miracle for you. Walk into the truth and into the fullness of what God has for you. Stop playing the victim! This man was so blinded by his excuse that he couldn’t even see that Jesus was offering him healing.

2. Decide to Accept your Circumstance

Everyday for years, this man continued to go to the pool for healing. Everyday, this man left without being healed. He continued to do the same things expecting different results. He had accepted his circumstance and was accepting that nothing would change.

If you want things to stay the way they are, accept your circumstance as something that won’t change. Your journey is not your destination! Instead, look for supernatural things and believe that God is calling you to new territory.

3. Look to Man

The man told Jesus that he had no one to help him get into the pool. He was waiting on someone to come along to help him get his miracle.

If you want to miss what God has for you, look for your pastor, spouse or others to get your miracle for you. It is a tactic of satan to have us believe that we can only find healing through a prayer of others. We do not have to go through anyone to get a breakthrough from Heaven. Instead, seek the Lord yourself and believe that God alone can bring your miracle. Believe that you do not need someone to bring your miracle.

4. Stay Around the Wrong People

Everyday this man sat with the other sick and crippled of the city. For years, he was around people that held him back from his miracle.

If you want to miss God’s miracle, get people in your life that can’t see what God has called you to do. Don’t be around people that are going to encourage you or build you up. Instead, surround yourself with people that influence you in the ways of God. Find people that will challenge you and hold you accountable.

5. Only Look for the Big Miracle

For 38 years, this man went to the same place waiting for his big miracle. How many small miracles did he miss because he would only accept the big one which was complete healing?

If you want to miss the miracle God has for you, only look for the big miracle. Make a decision that if you can’t have the big miracle that you will stand still and wait. Instead, take steps toward that big miracle every day. Step by step and moment by moment you come closer to what God has for you. The miracles are in the small steps as well as the large outcome. Live day to day knowing that each day is leading to your miracle. While we are about the destination, God is often about the process of getting there.

Hold on to Faith

Know that God is already in front of you making a way for your miracle. Make a decision to keep the truth of God’s word and declare it every day. If you don’t do these things, you will stop being a roadblock for God’s miracle in your life. Instead, hold on to the truth and have faith that God has a miracle for your life. Keep praying for your breakthrough and don’t grow weary.

This right here is just really neat to read. I love when you can find these hidden treasures within scripture that make you see things in a new light. I am familiar with this particular miracle in the Bible, but I have never seen it broken down like this. I love how you found that while the crippled man was waiting for his big miracle, theres no telling how many little miracles he missed in his life. I often get side tracked in my own life and am reminded that everyday there a miracles God has for me to witness. Reading this post has helped me by teaching me what not to do….hopefully this will mean I see more miracles more often. 😉 Thank you!

Wow. This is really convicting and something I think God wants me to take to heart. At times, I’ve definitely done all of these things! Appreciate the practical and powerful advice to “Know that God is already in front of you making a way for your miracle. Make a decision to keep the truth of God’s word and declare it every day.”
