It is really easy to get caught up in the “worldly” celebrations of Christmas. The trees, the lights, the food, the gifts…it is all so much fun. There is nothing wrong with having fun during Christmas but it is also important to keep Christ in Christmas.

3 ways to keep Christ in Christmas

  1. Celebrate Advent – What is Advent? The word “Advent” is derived from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming”. It is a celebration of Christ’s birth and His return. While there are several different ways to celebrate the Advent season depending on your particular religious affiliation, there are some ways that are standard.
    1. Daily Devotional – This is a great way to get the entire family involved! There are some links below of some resources to get you started.
      1. Advent Devotionals – There are many devotional books to choose from including some that are suitable for small children and the family.
      2. My Advent Activity Pack – The kids will love this! This fun activity pack that includes a beautiful pop-up stable scene—just peek inside and see Jesus in the manger! The scene has 24 windows set into the base to open throughout advent. Also included is a 16-page Christmas coloring book, and two sheets of fun and festive stickers. Recommended for ages 3 to 7 years.
      3. Advent Candle – The most common Advent candle tradition involves five candles. A new candle is lit on each of the four Sundays before Christmas. In some denominations, a fifth candle is placed in the middle and is lit on Christmas Day to celebrate Jesus’ birth. To read more about Advent Candles here is a great article.
  2. Sing Christmas Carols – Some of my best memories as a child are when my church would go Christmas Caroling. I realize that this may not be possible but you can do your own versions by adding singing some Christmas Carols to your nightly routine. If you are feeling adventurous, plan a Caroling trip to a few neighbors, make some cookies with the kids and go spread some Christmas cheer! When you get back home, don’t skip on the Hot Chocolate or Hot Apple Cider! This is fun and your kids will always remember it!  If you are not the type to sing, then listen to some great music while enjoying your hot drinks! Here is some Christmas Music to choose from.
  3. 3 Easy ways to keep Christ in Christmas - There are many ways but these are 3 ways that are easy to incorporate into your life and most are not expensive or cose nothing. - #Christ #ChristmasDo Something for Others – The commandment that Jesus gave us was to Love One another. What a great way to symbolize His birth than by doing an act of kindness for someone. You can get really creative with this family activity and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are a few ideas but the sky is really the limit with this one!
    1. Help an Elderly neighbor with some chores
    2. Take some holiday treats to a recent widow or widower
    3. Pick an Angel off of an Angel Tree and buy gift for a disadvantaged child

It will take some work to keep Christ in Christmas but it can be done by adding a couple of new traditions to your family holiday season. It is nice because these also encourage slowing down and spending quality time together.
