As a Christian, we should be actively trying to find out what God’s will is for our life. But how do you know what path God has chosen for you? If you are not sure of God’s plan, how do you find out what it is?

Finding out God’s purpose for our live should be on our minds as we face each decision. We should strive to know what each step we take is within the will of God.

The Importance of Finding God’s Will

In this world filled with temptations, chaos and confusion, finding God’s will has become very important. Knowing the things God wants us to do will help us become closer to God. This relationship will help us avoid the pitfalls of living in a sinfilled society.

Understanding God’s will for our lives will also give us our purpose within God’s plan. As Christians, it is our duty to share Jesus with others. This is our primary task within God’s will.

He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Mark 16:15Click to Tweet

Sharing the love of God with others is only the beginning. There is so much more within God’s plan for your lives. Each decision in our lives is an opportunity for us to walk within the will of God. Each choice we make in life also bring the chance of making a wrong turn. So how can we actively pursue God’s will in our lives? Here are 8 steps to help us find God’s will.

6 Ways to Find God’s Will

1. Study the Bible

It is likely that one of the reasons why there’s no clear cut way to discover God’s will for our lives is because God wants us to look to Him for direction. This is where our relationship with God comes into play. If we do not have a close relationship, God can not show us the direction He wants us to go.

In order to grow this relationship, we must learn more about Him. The only way to do that is through the study of the Bible. Through those words, we can learn about God and more about how He directs our paths.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

~Proverbs 3:5-7 (NIV)

This verse tell us to trust in the Lord and to only use what we understand through God’s Word. If we do that, God will direct our path.

2. Pray

Having an active prayer life is another way to grow our relationship with God. Not only that, it is also a way to find out God’s will and plan for our lives.

God tells us to pray continually and He really means it. Pray for wisdom and discernment in finding His will. Rejoice in the things God has done and thank Him.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

~1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

In this verse, we see that one part of God’s will is for us to pray!

3. Be Ready to Surrender

Finding God’s will for our lives is much more than asking God to approve our plans or choices. In fact, that is not what it means at all. The act of seeking is important but we must be ready to surrender to God’s plan.

Surrendering means that we are willing to do what God says do, go where God says go and act where God wants us to act. Without a willingness to do exactly what God says, knowing His plan does us no good. Sometimes, God will hold out on His plan for us because we have not reached a point of willingness to surrender.

4. Wait

Honestly, this is probably the hardest one for me. Waiting seems like such a waste of time and energy. I just want to know what I need to do and I want to get started now.

But sometimes, God’s will for us is to wait for further instruction. God has lessons built in to that waiting time but we often miss them because of our impatience. How many of us have lengthened out stay in “God’s Waiting Room” because we didn’t just wait without complaint? It is important for us to realize that God uses times of waiting to grow our faith in Him.

The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
    to the one who seeks him;

it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.

~Lamentations 3:25-26 (NIV)

5. Find Your Spiritual Gifts

God has given each of us special talents and abilities but He has also given us gifts from the Holy Spirit. Tapping into these will help us to discovering God’s plan for our lives.

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.

~Romans 12:6 (NIV)

6. Seek Godly Counsel

Besides praying, seeking Godly counsel is some of the most important conversations you can have. Having Christian friends or mentors that will pray with you, counsel you and ultimately tell you the truth even if you don’t like it is a critical part of staying on God’s path.

For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.

~Matthew 18:20 (NIV)

God designed us to seek counsel and prayer from others.

You’re so right, Jennifer. the hardest part of knowing and doing God’s will for our lives is to allow Him to work, be patient, pray, study and follow His rulebook, the Bible. So often we want to change the Bible from what it says, to what we want it to say. We want to change God to meet our need, vs changing our life to fulfill God’s will.
