I don’t know about you but I love bread! There is just something so satisfying about eating a piece of fresh, warm bread with butter. One of the greatest miracles that Jesus did was to feed 5000 people with five loaves of bread and and 2 fish. This act was not to meet a social need but was rather an way for Him to explain to the crowd that He is the Bread of Life.
The Bread of Life
What is the significance of Jesus saying that He is the Bread of Life? Bread in the Bible is symbolic of spiritual life. Our spiritual hunger is much like our physical hunger. When our body needs nourishment, our stomach tells our brain and we eat to satisfy that need. When we are spiritually hungry, only God can satisfy the need and Jesus is the “Bread” that we need.I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

The Importance of Bread
Bread isn’t as important in our diet today as it used to be in ancient times. Today, when you go out to eat, many restaurants bring you is a basket of bread. The bread is complimentary and it is meant to tide you over until the main course arrives. You can eat it or not because it isn’t the main meal. In the Jesus’ day, you didn’t pass on the bread because it was the main part of the meal.
Jesus described himself as the Bread of Life because He was using something that was vital to their life. Without bread, the people would physically starve. Without the Bread of Life, their souls would starve. The comparison shows how significant the statement is.
